Spigit for Government: Promoting Transparency

Overview: When the constitution was written, no one could have foreseen a time when you could allow all of your constituents the ability to participate collectively in government through the use of technology. U.S. President Barak Obama believes that Web 2.0 technologies are extremely powerful and should be harnessed by agencies to improve communications, increase productivity and facilitate government transparency. Social networking sites with government partners can help achieve a government's mission and promote cooperation across government, it can also establish connections across traditionally isolated and geographically dispersed organizations. State, Local and Federal government organizations are embracing social software to meet their goals of working more closely with citizens, innovating within their agencies, and lowering costs.

Challenge: The City of Manor, Texas needed a platform to connect the R&D division of Manor Labs with the City of Manor citizens. Their goal was to bring disengaged citizens into the larger discussion of improving government services and infrastructure. They desired a way to leverage the use of social tools to facilitate government transparency, cut costs and increase government/citizen engagement.

Solution: With Spigit, both employees and constituents can participate in the ideation process, resulting in increased job satisfaction for employees and increased satisfaction for citizens. As a result, citizens are more involved in civic decision-making and can work hand-in-hand with city staff to make community improvements. As a result, Spigit has helped the city identify over 46 new ideas in the first month of being implemented to increase efficiency and cut costs.
